REPORT

on the International Workshop on Inductive Modelling IWIM-2017

September, 5-8 2017, Lviv, Ukraine

The International Workshop on Inductive Modeling IWIM-2017 (see http://www.iwim.irtc.org.ua/openconf.php) was held on September 5-8, 2017, in Lviv Polytechnic National University in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference "Computer Science and Information Technologies" CSIT-2017(see http://www.csit.lp.edu.ua ) .

The event organizers were:

  • International Research and Training Center for Information Technologies and Systems of the NAS and MES of Ukraine;

  • Lviv Polytechnic National University;

  • Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic.

    The Chairman of the IWIM-2017 was Professor Volodymyr Stepashko.

    The Workshop was successive in the chain of International Conferences and Workshops being held since 2002 in Ukraine (Lviv-2002; Kyiv-2005, 2008, 2011-2016; Yevpatoria-2010) and abroad (Prague-2007; Krynica-2009, Poland). They are traditionally focused on the theory, new algorithms, and applications of automated data mining and knowledge discovery technologies based mainly on the GMDH methodology as a typical inductive approach to modeling from data originated by Academician Oleksiy Ivakhnenko.

    The motivation of this 9th Workshop was to:

  • analyze the state-of-the-art of methods that inductively generate models from data;
  • discuss concepts of an automated knowledge discovery workflow;
  • share new ideas on model validation and visualization;
  • present novel applications in various areas;
  • formulate promising ways of the research development.

    The Workshop Program consisted of 19 papers selected by international reviewers among 33 received contributions (3 reviewers per paper): 13 papers from Ukraine, 3 from Czech Republic, 2 from Russia and 1 from Germany. All these 19 papers were published in the "Proceedings of the XII IEEE International Conference CSIT-2017 and International Workshop on Inductive Modeling, September 05-08, 2017, Lviv, Ukraine, Publisher "Vezha&Co", Lviv, 2017, 580 p". Best 10 papers recommended by the reviewers will be presented as extended articles in the issue printed by Springer Verlag "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing II: Selected Papers from the International Conference on Computer Science and Information Technologies, CSIT 2017, September 5-8, Lviv, Ukraine". N. Shakhovska (LPNU) and V. Stepashko are editors of this issue.

    In total, 29 Ukrainian and 11 foreign scientists was authors of the Workshop papers, 5 of them were from Czech Republic, 3 from Russia, 1 from Germany and from China. All 19 papers were presented orally at the Workshop, 2 of them by Skype connection.

    All the Workshop papers are included in the IEEE Xplore digital library providing access to IEEE scientific journals and conference proceedings; and they are submitted to indexing by SCOPUS, Web of Science, etc., which will promote awareness of the wider world scientific community with the presented results.

    This scientific forum with wide international participation under the IEEE support testifies high development level of the theory, methods and tools of inductive modeling as an advanced approach of computational intelligence.

    The decision was made about holding the next International Workshop on Inductive Modelling IWIM-2018 again in September 2018 in Lviv, Ukraine, in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference "Computer Science and Information Technologies" CSIT-2018.
